Drs. Jan Piet Barthel, managing director

Bureau ACCSS

Jan Piet Barthel is managing director of ACCSS and strategic advisor to the board. Until the end of 2021 Jan Piet Barthel coordinated cybersecurity research at the Dutch Research Council NWO. Jan Piet has a Master’s degree in physics from the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Jan Piet worked as a software engineer and senior technical manager in the telecom industry. He has led several software development teams both in The Netherlands and in the US. From 2005 to 2011 Jan Piet was head of office of the Netherlands ICT Research and Innovation Authority (ICTRegie). His involvement in information/cyber security started in 2007. Jan Piet was initiator of dcypher (Dutch cybersecurity platform Higher education and research). In 2015 he was commissioned by the Ministry of Justice and Security to establish this platform. He held the role of director dcypher, till the end of 2020.

“With dcypher we have succeeded in making all kinds of connections between science, business and governments in the broad field of cybersecurity. In recent years, cybersecurity researchers from different scientific disciplines have gotten to know each other on that platform. While the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy was making plans to set up a new platform as a follow-up to dcypher, the multidisciplinary academic community appeared to be motivated to step up and get united. Contributing to building ACCSS is a privilege. I am convinced of the added value of this academic gateway to the cybersecurity field in its entirety.”
